The horse racing world was stunned last week when famed four-year-old Shared Belief suddenly died after a bout of colic at Golden Gate Fields in California Thursday.
The horse, co-owned by opinionated sportscaster Jim Rome, was training as part of his recovering from a fractured hip at the Charles Town Classic in April when it feel ill following a session and was found unresponsive in this stable. Shared Belief was taken to the local University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where he later died following surgery.
Shared Belief was a special horse with 10 victories in his 12 starts, most recently the Santa Anita Handicap G1 back in March. He had won three races in a row, starting with the Malibu G1 last December, before suffering his injury this spring.
The Kentucky-bred, Jerry Hollendorfer-trained horse finished fourth in the 2014 Breeder’s Cup Classic and was listed at +500 to win the 2016 event, behind front runner Beholder at +400, before his death.
Without him the early odds for the final big event of the horse racing season will get a shakeup. Here are two horses to remember when horse handicapping who could move up the board for the November 4, 2016 race at Santa Anita:
Keen Ice (+1,400)
Keen Ice’s claim to fame so far is spoiling a perfect season for Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga this summer, but he’s much more than a one-trick pony. He finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and has stayed busy ever since, with a fourth-place showing at the
Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs last month. Overall, the Dale Romans-trained 3-year-old has won two starts, placed in one other, and shown in three events. He’s no stranger to elite competition, which is what he’ll find in the 2016 Classic.
Brody’s Cause (+3,000)
This 2-year-old horse is a bit of a sleeper heading into the upcoming Triple Crown season. He’s +2,000 to win the 2016 Kentucky Derby but had a very strong run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, finishing third behind Nyquist – the early Derby favorite at 10/1 and a 25/1 long shot to win the 2016 Classic - and Swipe. He’s run only four races this season, but finished first in two of those events, capturing titles at Churchill Downs and Keeneland. This is another Romans-trained horse, which could have a big year lining up for the 2011 Preakness winning trainer.
